Sales Associate — Fabrix San Francisco
432 Clement Street, Inner Richmond District, San Francisco · Part-time, in-person · Sunday through Tuesday, 10:00 AM – 5:45 PM
About us
Fabrix is a family-owned fabric shop that has been part of San Francisco for over 30 years. We’re known for two things: a well-curated and ever-changing selection of deadstock fabrics and trims at prices you won’t find elsewhere, and staff who go above and beyond to help both beginner and experienced sewists alike. Customers drive across the Bay for us. Many of them have been shopping here for decades, most of whom walk in knowing our team by name.
The role
We’re hiring sales associates to work the floor Sunday through Tuesday. This is hands-on retail: you’ll spend the day talking with customers about their projects, pulling bolts, measuring and cutting, ringing up sales, and keeping the store in the kind of shape that makes people want to spend time discovering the perfect fabrics.
The best people in this job aren’t just processing transactions. They’re the reason a nervous beginner leaves with the right interfacing instead of the wrong one, and the reason an experienced sewist finds the trim they’d given up on.
Schedule: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, 10:00 AM – 5:45 PM · Pay Range: $20-25/hour, commensurate with experience · Benefits: 25% employee discount, paid sick leave, optional enrollment in CalSavers state retirement plan
What you’ll do
- Help customers solve problems. Ask what they’re making, listen, and guide them to fabrics and trims that will work for the project, the budget, and their skill level.
- Measure and cut accurately. Cut yardage cleanly and precisely — accuracy matters to us and to the customer’s project.
- Run the register. Process sales accurately and pleasantly.
- Keep the store inviting. Restock, straighten bolts, refold, organize trims, and keep the floor tidy and easy to shop.
- Receive and merchandise new goods. Our inventory turns constantly; help unpack/unload, price, and put out new arrivals
- Know the stock. Build a working mental map of what we carry and where it lives, so you can point someone to the right location in seconds.
- Look after the space and each other. Small team, shared work — everyone pitches in.
Who does well here
This is a great fit if you’re one of the following:
- An experienced sewist, quilter, or maker who genuinely enjoys talking through other people’s projects and gets satisfaction from sending someone home happy.
- A current or former industry professional looking for part-time work to supplement your other efforts, stay current in your knowledge of fabric and sewing, or just spend some of your days around people who share your enthusiasm for what we do.
- Someone building a retail career. We empower our employees, teach them the business of retail, and impart lessons drawn from our decades of experience.
The people who thrive at Fabrix tend to be reliable above all — they show up with a good attitude and on time, and their coworkers never have to wonder. They’re curious about materials, patient with beginners, able to multitask, and comfortable being busy.
What we’re looking for
Required
- A warm, people-friendly manner and patience with customers of every skill level
- Dependability — consistent attendance and punctuality for assigned shifts
- Hands-on sewing and/or quilting experience, enough to speak confidently about fabric weight, drape, fiber content, and what works for a given project
- Comfort with the physical side of the job: standing for the length of a shift, climbing a ladder, and lifting and carrying heavy fabric bolts
- Accuracy and care with measuring, cutting, and handling money
- A team-player attitude and a good work ethic — willingness to do the unglamorous parts without being asked
Nice to have
- Previous retail, customer service, or fabric store experience
- Knowledge of quilting, garment construction, upholstery, costuming, or home décor sewing
- A second language spoken by our neighborhood’s customers
- Comfort with point-of-sale systems
We’ll teach you our inventory, our systems, and our way of doing things. We can’t teach you to care about the work or to show up for our customers and your co-workers — bring those.
Why Fabrix
- You’ll actually use what you know. Your sewing knowledge isn’t a fun fact here; it’s the job.
- Customers who are glad to see you. People come in excited about what they’re making. That energy is contagious, and it makes for a good day.
- A small, tight-knit team. Family-owned, three decades in the same neighborhood, and a staff that looks out for each other.
- A great block to spend your day on. Clement Street’s restaurants, bakeries, and bookshops are right outside the door.
How to apply
Send your resume to fabrixsfstore@gmail.com with “Sales Associate” in the subject line. We’d love a few sentences along with it: what you like to make, and the last project you finished. It doesn’t need to be polished — we just want to hear what you’re into.
Fabrix is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds and experience levels.
